My husban...

Lisa, thanks for addressing this issue! My husband and I constantly work at staying attuned to the latest tech products/services because, in retirement, we now can really enjoy using the newest technologies to Skype with the grandkids, FB with our friends, play WWF with family and friends. When I first joined FB a couple of years ago, the daughter of one of my friends thought I was invading a young people's domain and complained to her dad, "Old people shouldn't be on here!" Now, look at the stats on the social networks - "old people" are very active!
However, our approach to keeping up with technology has changed slightly. Instead of spending hours learning how to do something new, we now take classes. When we purchased our new Macbook Pro in January, 2011, we very gladly paid the $99 for year of help from the Geniuses at the Apple Store. We gave them our old laptop and they converted all the files so that the desktop was replicated. This was a wonderful service for us!! The classes we have taken have been invaluable because we don't always remember from one time to the next how to accomplish a task. Right now we have a session scheduled to help us download a video from our camera and convert it to a DVD. I'm really impressed with you - you've got it down to a science. You're totally right - it will all change when Gus hits about 8 months or so and then again when he starts walking - all bets are off then! A few tips to add if it helps you - don't forget to grab that free plastic gate check bag at the luggage check in - most airlines don't have it back at the gates. A new toy for baby when he gets a little older on the plane is really helpful to distract. Wipe down the entire seat area with travel antibacterial wipes when you get on once baby starts reaching out for things and gnawing on the seatbelt (oh yeah, it's coming!) to prevent illness. When traveling, throw any routine out the door and just do whatever makes traveling easier on you - babies snap back really quickly the next day. Oh, and I TOTALLY agree with you on the coffee. That's still one of the hardest things for me while traveling is not having that coffee, but you are right - it's just too much! Have fun!

Do you use evernote, Lisa? I’m going to start typing these outside of this webpage! And sorry for the delay, every time I’ve wanted to respond to this I’ve been on the road and away from my book. I wanted to look back through and make sure I was giving credit where due.

By the way, I agree with your team comments. That was the one part of this chapter that didn’t quite sit right with me either.

But back to the overall questions about whether autonomy applies to all organizations. Pink does assert from the beginning that all of his research on intrinsic motivation ties to non-routine type tasks. So your point about people with higher cognitive ability or more education could hold true… indirectly. I’d say those people are most likely to be in organizations or roles where they are doing more non-routine type tasks.

The examples he gives in this chapter center around a few case studies, which makes for interesting reading but won’t satisfy your statistical cravings. Here are a couple of references to some “studies”.

“Researchers at Cornell University studied 320 small businesses, half of which granted workers autonomy, the other half relying on top-down direction. Ugh! This won’t be nearly as long or thoughtful but I figured I’d try to comment again. Basically, the Team aspect you discuss from the book is a little worrisome to me. I feel like it would be come a click society reminiscent of High School. People would pick to work with their friends and people they wanted to go to Happy Hour with after work, instead of putting the best team together based on strengths and assets. Can you imagine if we let all the basketball players or baseball players put together their own teams? Could be a disaster. It is my opinion that you have to have someone who is objective pull the team together based on relevant skills, etc. instead of likeability.
I do love the autonomy idea but I also think that it won’t work for everyone or for every organization. Did he discuss in his book if this was true for ALL job types and organizations? You mention that “Research shows…” Does he describe the research study sample? It seems to me that there are still people (and frankly jobs) that require set hours and structure. I have an idea of the types of organizations which would not do well to let their employees be completely autonomous but I’m curious if he had anything to say about it. I don’t think it’s a bad thing, it’s just the way it is. I also wonder if it’s related to level of education or cognitive ability? I would be very surprised if he could defend that this would be true for all job types in the workplace. I might even argue that we are not all built to work autonomously. Do you have any thoughts on this?

I want to connect you with Rally's coaches and...

I want to connect you with Rally's coaches and our team working on Stratus.
