I feel the ITIL like other frameworks have their place but are not the complete solution to address business problems. I think the challenge that individuals have with ITIL is that it provides some general ideas on the processes, but it is the responsibility on the organization on how they get there.

I think the business (IT) needs to evaluate what their challenges are before they decide if ITIL is the framework that can help them get their. There are organization are are development heavy that ITIL would probably make it difficult to create products. I have had contacts that are going down the ITIL route just to say the are implementation ITIL.

I see the largest challenge with the implementation of ITIL processes is the successful implementation of the process groups. It requires all the different silos of IT to communicate and then present the services to the business. I think most business underestimate the challenges and commitment it takes to provide a service based business. It is not a one year implementation and it never ends. That will probably scares off a number of implementers.

As I stated in previous paragraphs, make sure you understand your challenges before you assume that ITIL will fix them. It is still focused on the operations part of the business as Lisa stated in her post. They have tried to spread out the focus in Version 3 but I still feel it is operational.
